Virtualisation Case Study

UOMSUOMS removed temperature problems and enhanced their Disaster Recovery with Virtualisation

Utility Operations & Maintenance Services (UOMS) manages the 400MW combined cycle gas-powered generation plant located at Pigeon House Road in Dublin.

With the increasing demands on IT and the opening of the Electricity Market it was imperative that UOMS were able to provide their customers and users with a secure, dynamic, reliable and scalable IT infrastructure.

DNM Technology is an independent IT infrastructure company who specialise in virtualisation, databases and intelligent data storage & management.

DNM Technology performed a complete re-design of the server, backup and storage infrastructure.

This involved the analysis of UOMS current environment and future business requirements.

This project delivered to UOMS:

  • An enterprise SAN from EMC
  • New VMware virtual farm on HP based server environment
  • Redesigned and upgraded backup environment
  • New disaster recovery solutions with full documentation and testing

DNM Technology also migrated all the old physical servers to the new environment with little or no impact on the business users.

Furthermore, DNM Technology continue to provide their Assurance Service to the complete environment and provide a single point of contact for all support queries.

Noel Ryan, with UOMS explains the rationale behind the move.
"With a limited IT staff, we were coming under increased pressure to deploy more server environments and to provide disaster recovery capabilities. In addition, we had very limited suitable space for IT equipment"

"With limited space in our computer room and increasing server numbers, we had an issue with space and the ability to react to the ever changing business needs. With our technology and services partner, DNM Technology, we designed and implemented a new server environment based on VMware."
Noel Ryan, Safety and IT Manager, UOMS
